About the Event:
The Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce's Annual Meeting is held every fall to celebrate the past year, glimpse into the new year, and recognize our outgoing and incoming Board Chair. The highlight of the evening is honoring the recipient of our coveted Spindletop Award. We are excited to announce the 2019 Spindletop Award Recipient is the Sabine Neches Navigation District. The 2019 Spindletop Award winner will be formally recognized at the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting on October 15th.
The Chamber is also honored to announce the keynote speaker for the Annual Meeting, Lieutenant General Gwen Bingham, Army Assistant Chief of Staff, Installation Management at the Pentagon.
Lieutenant General Bingham has served in multiple capacities throughout her long and distinguished career. From Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom while serving as Special Assistant to the Commanding General, 1st Theater Sustainment Command, Camp Arifjan, Kuwait; Kabul, Afghanistan and Kandahar, Afghanistan. LTG Bingham has been a trailblazer serving as the first woman to hold numerous positions as a General Officer. They include: the Army’s 51st Quartermaster General and Commandant of the US Army Quartermaster School, Fort Lee, Virginia; the Commanding General, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico and as Commanding General, Tank-automotive and Armaments Life Cycle Management Command (TACOM), Warren, Michigan.
On June 30, 2016, she was confirmed by the Senate for promotion to Lieutenant General and assignment in the Pentagon as the Army Assistant Chief of Staff, Installation Management.
Lieutenant General Bingham is the recipient of the 2018 Ellis Island Medal of Honor and the 2018 Women in Defense Service to the Flag award.
The Sabine Neches Navigation District has operated in Jefferson County for over 100 years. It was formed in 1909 and designated manager of the Taylor’s Bayou Saltwater Barrier. Later, that designation included acting as local non-Federal Sponsor to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Sabine-Neches Waterway. Since that time, the SNND has been constantly working to maximize the efficiency of the waterway, providing improvement projects to keep the waterway competitive with other U.S. ports.
Multiple energy and petrochemical businesses operate along the waterway and it serves the military and the Coast Guard as well. These businesses transport hundreds of products through the ship channel, including natural gas, jet fuel, gasoline, crude oil and chemicals. Each year, approximately 71,000 vessel transit and more that 100 million tons of cargo move through the water.
All seats are reserved. Tickets must be purchased before the event. For additional information, visit the chamber website at bmtcoc.org.
History of the Spindletop Award:
The Spindletop Award was created in 1999 to recognize larger area businesses for outstanding corporate citizenship and overall impact on our community. A committee consisting of Board members and past chairs of the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce chooses the award recipient. Some of the factors considered in the selection are prior history in our community, the overall impact on the economic vitality of Southeast Texas, collaboration with other business and governmental entities, forging a common path for the development of our area and overall reputation as an outstanding organization.
